Treatment of Asthma: Benefits of Tylophora indica

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to difficulty in breathing. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, and persistent coughing.

Precautions for Managing Asthma

  1. Avoid Allergens: Steer clear of common allergens such as dust, smoke, pollen, pet dander, and mold, which can trigger asthma symptoms.
  2. Protect Against Cold and Infections: Be mindful of cold weather and avoid exposure to respiratory infections. Regular hand washing and flu vaccinations can help prevent infections.
  3. Take Medications Regularly: Adhere to your doctor’s recommendations and use prescribed inhalers or other medications consistently, even if you feel well. These medications help maintain lung health.
  4. Manage Stress: Stress and anxiety can precipitate asthma attacks. Engage in relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga, or other stress-reducing activities.
  5. Get Adequate Rest: Ensure you get sufficient sleep and rest to support overall health and effective asthma management.
  6. Maintain a Clean Environment: Keep your home and work environment clean, particularly your bedroom. Regularly clean bedding and carpets to minimize dust and allergens.
  7. Watch Your Diet: Avoid foods or beverages containing preservatives or artificial colors, as they may trigger asthma symptoms in some individuals.
  8. Exercise Wisely: Begin exercise gradually and ensure proper warm-up. Consult your doctor if you experience shortness of breath during or after exercise.
  9. Avoid Environmental Triggers: Stay away from polluted air, chemical fumes, and strong odors, as these can worsen asthma symptoms.
  10. Have an Emergency Plan: Be prepared for sudden asthma attacks. Keep necessary medications and inhalers with you at all times.

The Role of Antomul (Tylophora indica) in Ayurvedic Treatment of Asthma

In Sanskrit, the plant is known as “Astra-pachak,” while in Hindi and Bengali, it is called “Antomul.” In English, it is also referred to as “Antomul.” The scientific name is Tylophora indica (Burm.f.) Merr., and it belongs to the Asclepiadaceae family. Formerly, it was known as Tylophora asthmatica (Tytophora asthmatica Wt. & Ar.). As its name implies, this plant is used in the treatment of asthma.

Distribution and Characteristics

Antomul is found in eastern, central, and southern India, including West Bengal. The roots of this climbing plant contain alkaloids such as Tylophorine and Tylophorinine.

Botanical Description

The Antomul plant can grow up to 1.5 meters long. Its roots are long and thick, and the leaves are arranged in opposite pairs along the stem. The leaves are 5-10 centimeters long, 4-4.5 centimeters wide, with pointed tips, and the petioles are about 2.5 centimeters long. The small flowers are pale yellow with a greenish tinge and a purple center, each having five petals approximately 6 millimeters long, and they grow in clusters. The fruit is shiny, 5-10 centimeters long, found in pairs, and pointed at one end. The seeds are round, around 2 centimeters long.

Uses and Benefits

To treat asthma, chew one green leaf on an empty stomach every morning. Relief is often noticeable within 6-7 days. Alternatively, consuming half a teaspoon of dried leaf powder twice daily for a week can produce similar results.

Chewing the root initially offers a sweet taste. It acts as a stimulant, emetic, diaphoretic, and appetite enhancer, and is also used as a purgative.

The leaf juice is particularly effective for asthma, bronchial inflammation, dysentery, and diarrhea. The plant flowers in April-May and bears fruit in September-October. It can be cultivated in the ground or in pots at home.
